Request for Proposals for Future Capstone Projects

DESCRIPTION:  Senior students from across the College of Engineering, Forestry and Natural Sciences are available to work in teams to tackle applied research and design projects for companies, the community or individuals.   We are looking for projects that can be completed over the span of an academic year and give students the “real-world” challenge of applying and practicing their technical, management, and communication skills.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION DUE DATE:  A brief written description of the proposed project is needed by Monday, August 25th, 2008.  Please include the knowledge and skills required, as this information helps us to better match students to projects, especially if the project is interdisciplinary in scope.  You will be notified in late September if a team was assigned your project. Therefore, if you or your organization desires to have a team of CEFNS seniors work on your project, please contact:

Ms. Bonnie O’Donnell, Director of Development,  Bonnie.ODonnell@nau.edu, (928) 523-8765
or
David R. Scott, Chair of Electrical Engineering,
David.Scott@nau.edu, (928) 523-3162

BENEFITS:  You help by providing an excellent learning opportunity, grounded by industry practice, on problems that you want to address.  You also interact with students who may be potential employees for you, and the work accomplished may prove beneficial to you.

SCOPE OF WORK:  Teams of seniors interact with sponsoring clients to define and implement specific projects. Projects are initiated in the fall semester and concluded in early May.   Student teams present their work at the college’s annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Design, scheduled for April, 24, 2009, and submit to you, a proposal, progress reports, and a final report.  If appropriate, the team may also deliver a prototype, design plans, or a completed product.

SPONSOR COMMITMENT:  Sponsors must be committed to providing a learning experience and be willing to communicate on a regular and timely basis with their student team.  Projects should include opportunities for students to learn and apply new technical or interdisciplinary skills, analyze and make trade-offs, incorporate contemporary issues, and apply project management methods.

Sponsors are asked to fund the direct costs of the project that include material and manufacturing costs, specialized software, hardware or equipment costs, and student travel expenses.  We also encourage our sponsors to make tax-deductible donations to our Senior Design Foundation Fund.  This fund is used to enhance our Design4Practice program and finance a limited number of non-commercial capstone projects (e.g. a community service projects or design competitions).
