Geology Department Facilities & Equipment

The following is a quick reminder of the resources available to graduate students and faculty within the Geology Department.  These resources are available for use in teaching and research.  Most of the equipment is checked out through the Laboratory Supplies Controller (LSC) office, unless otherwise noted.

GIS/GPS Computer Field Mapping Equipment

The Geology Department has 83 pen-tablet computers (see table below). The ten Xplore units have integrated GPS systems. The HP and XPlore tablets run a full version of ArcGIS. Both undergraduate and graduate Geology students regularly take these machines into the field for their research work.

Teaching Equipment

  • Videos - found in the video cabinet located in the mailroom, entrance key to the building opens the lock. PLEASE SIGN OUT ALL VIDEOS (Appendix 1)

  • Slide sets - found on the bottom shelf of the video cabinet, slide carousels are available from the LSC (Appendix 2)

  • Foam Core Posters - various maps and posters have been affixed to foam board and are available for use in teaching. These can be checked out through the LSC or found in the lecture rooms in building 12 (Appendix 3)

  • Intro Lab Maps - various maps that can be used in teaching intro labs, found on the map shelves and in cabinets in the intro lab rooms (Appendix 4)

  • Intro Lab Equipment - rocks, minerals, maps, etc.  If any supplies are running low please contact the LSC.  There is also clay to aid in teaching labs available to check out through he LSC office

  • 7.5 minute US Topo maps - A listing of all maps held by the Geology Department, including number held and notes. (US 7.5 minute topos)

Field Equipment

  • Brunton Compasses - azimuth and quadrant

  • Camping Equipment - request forms are outside the LSC office

  • Clinometers

  • Coring soil and shallow rock drill rig - contact Dr. Abe Springer

  • Digital cameras

  • Garmin Etrex Summit GPS receivers - with cables and computer connectivity

  • HP Compaq Tablet PC tc1100 and Fujitsu Stylistic 3500R Pen tablet field computers - requires advisor's permission

  • Measuring tapes - English and metric

  • Sample splitter/Sediment separator

  • Stereoscopes - pocket and desktop

  • Rock Crushing and Mineral Separation Lab - Building 24 and building 13, room 307 (Dr. Nancy Riggs)

  • Rock Lab - Thin sectioning and sieving facilities - Building 24 - contact the LSC (Appendix 5)

  • X-ray diffractometer - Building 12, room 208 (Dr. Rod Parnell)

  • X-ray fluorescence - USGS

Drafting/Office Equipment

  • Computer lab equipped with Windows and Macintosh platform machines, GIS workstations, slide scanner, digital palette, flatbed scanners, black and white laser printer, color ink jet printer, and large format plotter

  • Drafting and slide printing - traditional or digital available from Bilby research center

  • LCD Projectors for presentations - one in room 103 and two on portable carts. A spare is available for use from the LSC

  • Map enlargements, mylars, and blue line copies of maps - USGS or Visible Difference

  • Photographic dark room - contact Dr. Dave Elliott

  • Scans of large format maps can be made at Arizona Engineering

  • Slide Carousels and laser pointers can be checked out from the LSC

Libraries/Reference Materials

  • Cline Library - building 28 - modest collections in geology, great inter-library loan program, and access to GEOREF

  • USGS, Museum of Northern Arizona, and Lowell Observatory also have libraries.  However, checkout privileges are restricted to associates of those organizations

  • Geology conference room in building 13 - Contains an assortment of old books, journals (Appendix 6), and DNAG books (Appendix 7).  You can get an idea of what we have and where it is located in the conference room by checking Appendix 8.  All books and journals can be signed out.  Please return immediately after use.  DNAG volumes can be checked out through the LSC.

  • Cenozoic gravels on Colorado Plateau by Carol Hill and Wayne Ranney (a preliminary report available in Conference Room Library to interested parties)

  • Maps and air photos - The department owns several cases of topographic maps and air photos. An inventory exists of the topographic maps. Contact the LSC
