The B.S. in Geology curriculum is designed to provide students with training that will help them to become competitive for job applications and applications for graduate studies. Our program is field and computer oriented, utilizing state-of-the-art GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technologies in coursework. Students engage in field work in some of the most spectacular geologic sites in North America, including Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, and Death Valley National Parks, all of which are within a day's drive. Students are encouraged to participate in research projects supervised by faculty. Those who complete research projects and perform well in course work may become eligible to receive departmental honors upon graduation. Geology majors take a set of core courses and select one emphasis. An emphasis is set of classes that focuses on a particular specialty. Students who do not wish to specialize take our "General Geology" emphasis. Students who wish to specialize may select from emphases in Geochemistry, Environmental Geology, Paleontology, Geophysics, GIS, Hydrogeology, and Engineering Geology. Students do not need to decide on an emphasis until their junior year.
