ME Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the B.Sc. program in mechanical engineering at NAU will have achieved the following learning outcomes:

  • an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering;
  • an ability to communicate effectively;
  • a knowledge of chemistry and calculus-based physics with depth in physics;
  • an ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems;
  • have essential skills in writing, critical reading, critical thinking and creative thought;
  • an ability to apply advanced mathematics through multivariate calculus and differential equations;
  • an ability to function on design teams and multidisciplinary teams;
  • an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs;
  • a recognition of the need for and an ability to engage in life-long learning;
  • an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility;
  • an ability to design and conduct experiments as well as to analyze and interpret data;
  • an ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools, such as computers, necessary for engineering practice;
  • an ability to lead a team-based engineering activity
  • an ability to work professionally in both thermal and mechanical systems areas, including the design and realization of such systems;
  • the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global/societal context;
  • familiarity with statistics and linear algebra; and
  • a knowledge of contemporary issues as related to the mechanical engineering profession, including engineering economic issues.
