What we are all about!
NAU Math Club is nationally sponsored organization composed of individuals who are interested in various aspects of Mathematics. The club's purposes range from presenting to the world the importance of math to sharpening our minds though games and problems of thought. More importantly the club is a community of friends who all share (to some degree :) a love of mathematical beauty. Members have the option of joining the Mathematical Association of America for a small fee.

Math Club Meeting Minutes - from last meeting, 04/09/08

I. Coconino County Math Contest!

- Thanks to everyone who submitted PowerPoints for the Coconino County Math
Contest!  We got a chance to look over them, admire them, and provide some
helpful critiques at the last meeting.  Dr. Wilson has requested that we
e-mail him the PowerPoints so he can have a chance to look them over and
decide which ones would be ideal for the contest --  e-mail them to Dr. Wilson
at Stephen.Wilson@nau.edu. Also, if any of you are interested in creating a
couple more PowerPoints for the event, please feel free to do so! (If you
would like information on what they should entail, please check the last
couple Math Club meeting minute e-mails, or send me an e-mail at
kdw62@nau.edu.)

- Also, if you’d like to help out with the actual contest, volunteers would be
helpful and appreciated! It will take place on Thursday morning, May 1st, at
the W. A. Franke Business Building. Stay tuned for more information.

II. COLLEGE BOWL!

The College Bowl Math Competition is quickly approaching! At our previous
meeting we went over some details for the event...
- Crystal agreed to ask Dr. Wilson for some past NAU Math Day questions
- Christin agreed to talk to Marcus for some helpful tips and advice, and also
to talk with Bea about securing a room for the actual event
- I (Kim) agreed to make flyers for the event, and David agreed to make copies
of the flyers to post around the math building, University Union, and library.
Keep an eye out for them!

- We need to get out a lot of advertising for this event, so be sure to tell
your friends about it.  It will take place this Friday, April 25th, from about
4:00-6:00 pm in the Math Building.  Also, for all of those on Facebook, be
sure to check out our Facebook event, join, and invite your friends! The more,
the merrier, after all!

Also: Tori, if you could change the Math Club bulletin board to include
information about the competition, that’d be spectacular! Nicely done with the
"Pies for Pi Day" design, by the way - it looked cool and was much
appreciated!

- We will also need volunteers for this event: helpers to set-up, clean-up,
and make sure things are running smoothly.

- We discussed possibly selling concessions (including breakfast items and
perhaps also pizza and soda?) at the event and still need to procure prizes
for the winners.  This will be discussed at our next (and final!!) meeting of
the semester, along with some finalizations on how to run the event, etc. Be
sure to come and add your two cents! (and to volunteer... *nudge, nudge*)

III. Breakfast Table

- We realized that we’ve been in dire need of some breakfast items for quite a
while, and thus decided to take inventory at the next available opportunity...
Otherwise, the table appears to be running smoothly.

IV. Sonia Kovalevsky Day

- CEFNS is holding Sonia K Day on April 26th from 8:30 am to the early
afternoon, as an outreach for high school girls interested in math and the
sciences. For more information about the event, go to
http://www.CEFNS .nau.edu/sonia, and if any female students are interested in
assisting with the event (as a role model/example student of sorts), please
e-mail Christin at cb295@nau.edu.

V. Last Meeting of the Semester!!

- Another semester come and gone for NAU Math Club - but not without final
preparations to make at our final meeting!  It will be held this Wednesday,
April 25th, same time, same place as per usual (7 pm, Adel).  Please come and
join us, we hope to see you there (and at the College Bowl!)
