The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is committed to excellence in teaching and research in mathematics, mathematics education, and statistics.
Department faculty educate undergraduate and graduate majors, and offer courses designed to meet the needs of students in other programs of study. We have over 100 undergraduate majors and over 20 graduate students (full and part time). We place a strong emphasis on effective teaching and engagement with all our students. We view our role in undergraduate education as vital, and try to ensure that our graduates have a firm foundation in classical mathematics and the training necessary to apply the ideas of mathematics in whatever career they pursue.
Our summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program involves students in mathematics research with Department faculty, resulting in a rewarding experience for both and often leading to publications in mathematics journals.
The Department provides graduate students with unique opportunities to both learn and teach mathematics in a personal, relaxed environment. We offer an M.S. in mathematics and in statistics, and an M.A.T. in mathematics education. The M.S. in mathematics includes a thesis option for students who wish to pursue a special area of interest that is beyond the normal level of coursework. We also offer a Certificate in applied statistics, intended primarily for students pursuing graduate degrees in other disciplines.
Department faculty are active in research. Research interests of the faculty include: analysis, combinatorics and combinatorial group theory, differential equations including nonlinear PDEs, dynamical systems, mathematics education, nonlinear functional analysis, numerical analysis, operations research, statistics (measures of agreement, mixed linear models, nonlinear regression, variance components), and topology.

Northern Arizona University is in Flagstaff, which is located at an altitude of 7,000 feet above sea level nestled in the San Francisco peaks. Flagstaff is known for its tall pine forests, high mountains, several spectacular canyons and numerous other natural attractions. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is located in the Adel Mathematics Building on the north campus of the University.
