Mathematics Placement

To register for a mathematics or statistics course, a student must have the necessary mathematics placement. Initial placement is usually based on the student's ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER mathematics scores. If the student has earned a grade of C or better in a course prerequisite at an accredited college or university, that information is also used to determine mathematics placement. The table below summarizes how ACT mathematics scores, SAT mathematics scores, ACCUPLACER mathematics scores, and prerequisite course information is used to establish initial mathematics placement (course eligibility).

Undergraduate students who have not taken the ACT or the SAT, and who do not have mathematics credit from an accredited college or university will need to take the ACCUPLACER mathematics placement examination before they will be allowed to register for a mathematics course.

Students who believe that their placement does not reflect their mathematics knowledge and readiness to take a particular course, may challenge their placement by taking the ACCUPLACER mathematics exam. The ACCUPLACER exam is not intended to replace mathematics coursework that a student has not completed and therefore ACCUPLACER may not be used to "skip over" a college-level course after a student has completed a mathematics course at an accredited college or university.

ACCUPLACER exams, both to establish and to challenge mathematics placement, are offered on Day 1 of each Orientation session, at other times prior to the start of each semester, and may also be scheduled by appointment at the counseling and Testing Center during the regular academic year. Orientation students will receive information about how to schedule an exam during Orientation. Non-Orientation students who believe they need to schedule an ACCUPLACER mathematics exam should first contact an advisor at the University Gateway Center or contact the Mathematics Placement Director (see contact information below).

Students enrolled in a mathematics course who have not satisfied the placement requirements for the course by the first day of class will be required to drop the course.

Transfer students whose mathematics placement does not reflect transfer credit for coursework in which they have obtained a university or college grade of A, B, or C in the required prerequisite courses may need to provide proof that they have met the prerequisites in order to have their mathematics placement updated.

For further information about mathematics placement, contact the Department of Mathematics and Statistics Placement Director at 928-523-3481 or send e-mail to matpla-p@jan.ucc.nau.edu.
