Faculty Travel Awards Program
Beginning with the 2005-06 academic year, the Office of the Provost has been collaborating with the college to support benefits-eligible faculty for travel.
The overall purpose of this program is to provide modest financial support for faculty travel and professional development opportunities in a systematic
and fair manner.
Support may be requested if the applicant is presenting a professional paper, is an invited participant at a conference, has been selected in a
competitive process to participate in a symposium session, is interested in investigating innovative instructional methods and/or strengthening teaching
skills, or is accompanying students in a university activity. The travel and related activity must be deemed beneficial to the faculty member, the
department, the college and the University. This travel award is not meant to support a faculty member's sabbatical, unless the other criteria are
applicable. Preference will be given to those requests where the department is providing matching funds, and those that are closely tied to one or
more of NAU's identified goals and/or the college strategic plan.
NOTE: Beginning with the January 2008 cycle, the College is pleased to support requests for "no-travel" travel - that is, participation by webcase, video conference, or similar technologies. We would support registration costs and other expenses related to participation in workshops, conferences or the like facilitated by technology rather than travel.
The college is pleased to be able to allocate modest support, primarily from indirect cost recovery and from summer school over-attainment. College
contributions have generally been in the range of $150-$250, depending on need and relevance to college priorities (see below). The Provost is
contributing $7,500 to our college this year; these funds will be used to supplement the highest ranking of these requests with an additional $250 or
more.
There will be three due dates or cycles for requests. Faculty should submit applications to the Dean's office by September 30, January 30, or May 30 (or the closest business day thereafter) each year. Applications should be delivered in hard copy form, complete with all signatures and documentation
(e.g. of departmental contributions), by close of business on the deadline. ***An individual may receive only one travel grant per year (academic year
cycle).***
Proposals will be reviewed and prioritized at the college level; we rank highest those activities that represent the integration of a faculty member's
research and teaching, and efforts to improve our academic programs. Among those requests related more narrowly to an individual's research, we give higher priority to pre-tenure faculty members, those traveling internationally, and those with strong departmental support.
Applicants for support from the Dean's Faculty Travel Awards Program must:
- Complete the application/request
- Attach a complete budget
- Provide information on financial contributions from the department or other sources
- Provide documentation of acceptance of the paper/abstract or other role within the conference, or at least some documentation of the meeting and schedule for abstract acceptance, etc.; or an invitation from a host
