What: A recognition and display of the research achievements of our talented undergraduate CENS students. We ask that every student involved in undergraduate research and senior design projects within our college participate in this conference including those with REU, Hooper, NASA Space Grant, Beckman, MSD, IGERT, and UMEB funding, students working with individual faculty members, those on summer support – EVERYONE!
Laura Roberts, CEO of Pantheon Chemical (Phoenix) will be the featured speaker at a lunch sponsored by Gore for all participants and their faculty advisors. Lavish snacks will also be provided by Gore during the full-day of research presentations. Visits of
the Advisory Boards to CENS will occur simultaneously so our audience will extend beyond the borders of NAU.
How: As in years past, the Capstone Design Conference will utilize four venues in Dubois for design teams to present their projects
in oral presentations along with poster sessions. Our Mathematics and Science students will present their research in poster sessions that will be displayed all
day and staffed for several hours during the day. All posters will be judged by faculty, alumni and friends of CENS, and the top 3 posters in each Engineering Design and Undergraduate Research will be recognized and receive modest prizes.
Why: One unquestionable strength of our college (and NAU) is our commitment to and support of undergraduate research and design projects. Our goal as a
college is to enhance that strength with increased visibility and support.
In order to insure that every eligible undergraduate student participates, we will make every effort to remove obstacles. For example, the college
will cover the costs of printing posters for students lacking existing support to do so. Our
only stipulation being that the posters be displayed on our halls once the conference is completed.
Finally, it will be up to each one of us in the college to make this a success by publicizing and promoting it. We anticipate that the local press will
be in attendance and we hope each of you invite other guests as well. Our goal is that this annual event becomes ingrained in the culture of our college; many of the classes in the college can take
advantage of this event by assigning students to observe and report on posters. In the process, we hope a number of them will be inspired to become
the next generation of undergraduate researchers (a nice positive feedback loop). If you have additional ideas on how to enhance this experience for
the students, faculty staff or visitors, please send me your suggestions.
