Undergraduate Research Programs

Beckman Scholars Program The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation provides scholarships to exceptional biology, chemistry, and biochemistry undergraduates undertaking research projects relevant to their area of study. The scholarships are awarded for an academic year and two summer sessions. Recipients present their project findings at the annual national gathering of Beckman Scholars.

Henry Hooper Undergraduate Research Awards (HURA)

Since 1997, our undergraduates have received funding through the HURA program, which provides stipends, research funds, and support for travel to national conferences. HURA annually supports up to 30 science and engineering students who choose to conduct research outside of their academic courses.
The Geospatial Research and Information Laboratory (GRAIL) Housed on the NAU campus, GRAIL supports emerging technologies and environmental reearch, with an emphasis on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The laboratory's START program promotes the synthesis of research and education by matching students' interests with current research projects and assisting them with paid internships.
Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) IGERT invites undergraduates to participate in cutting-edge research projects that explore relationships between genes and the environment. Students work closely with faculty and graduate mentors, developing the necessary skills to design projects that broaden the area of gene research and may lead to significant discoveries.
Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC U*STAR) Program The MARCU*STAR Program at Northern Arizona University is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with the goal of increasing the number of well-trained students from underrepresented groups who enter research careers in biomedical research.

Minority Student Development (MSD) Program

MSD is funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) to increase the academic performance, retention, and graduation rates of underrepresented minority students, who are or could become interested in careers in biomedical professions.

National Undergraduate Research Observatory (NURO)

NURO is a consortium of primarily undergraduate institutions which have joined together to provide hands-on training and research experiences for undergraduate students. Its mission is to encourage more undergraduate students to choose scientific careers.

NAU/NASA Space Grant The NAU/NASA Space Grant has an Undergraduate Intership that gives students experience in conducting research with a mentor here at NAU.
Ottens Undergraduate Research Grant for Native Americans The John and Sophie Ottens Foundation provides scholarships to Native American freshmen studying health and environmental sciences. Ottens scholars are matched with faculty mentors and participate in hands-on research over a 15-month period. Participating students gain experience in conducting scientific research and receive academic and career counseling through NAU's Native American Student Services Office.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Astronomy Eight undergraduate students will work in Flagstaff with researchers from the NAU Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, the Lowell Observatory, the U. S. Geological Survey in Flagstaff, the U. S. Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, and the National Undergraduate Research Observatory Consortium. The research projects available vary from year to year, and have included planetary science, astrogeology, stellar astrophysics, instrumentation work, and extragalactic research.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Behavioral and Conservation Sciences The purpose of this program is to provide undergraduate students, especially under-represented minority and first-generation college students, with the opportunity to participate in an intensive research program. Undergraduates participate in seminars and fieldwork, learning research design, the use of statistical methods and computers, and the ethical guidelines of research subjects.
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Environmental Sciences The REU in Environmental Sciences at NAU is a 10-week intensive summer program where you will work with faculty mentors on laboratory- and field-based research and participate in field trips and a series of seminars, including seminars on scientific writing and ethics. You will also participate in three overnight field sessions at the Walnut Creek Center for Education and Research, near Prescott, Arizona
Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Mathematics and Statistics Six top undergraduates are chosen to assist a faculty mentor with advanced research and co-author papers for journal publications.

Undergraduate Mentoring in Environmental Biology Program (UMEB)

Examining ways in which humans have impacted environments of the Colorado Plateau is the organizing theme of this program. Strong emphasis is placed on recruitment of Native Americans, Hispanic Americans, and African Americans.
